In the hidden hole in the wall of an abbey in a small French village or Ruac, the current abbot finds an old manuscript written in code. The cover of the manuscript has an image of Saint Bernard of Clairvoux, the famous founder of the Knights Templar. The introductory note of the manuscript reveals that the writer was 200+ years old at the time of the writing. Hugo Pineau, an expert on manuscripts, enlisted by the abbot to help with the decoding, calls on his friend, a Paleolithic-specialised archaeologist to help him with the investigation. Together, they will discover a 30000-year-old cave with art-work more fascinating and more important than the one in Lascaux. But there are secrets connected with the manuscript and the cave that more than one person wants to keep that way and they will resort to anything, including (mass)murder, to achieve it.

The book is a typical action and secrets-packed adventure, already seen in the writings of Glenn Cooper. The formula is pretty much the same, a manuscript that reveals an ancient secret, an unconnected person who stumbles on the secret, secret brotherhoods that want to keep the secret (both on local and state level), POW changing through different time periods which helps you to connect the dots and the big reveal in the end....and lots of innocent people that play the part of collateral damage. Overall, for the lovers of history and archaeology, it's an interesting enough light read.

I was surprised to find this really entertaining despite the reviews.

Ultimately I did finish this but I was really speed reading and flipping through the last few chapters quickly.

The writing style didn't really connect with me and then when plot twists were being revealed I kind of already guessed a fair few of them.

Good mystery about a professor who discovers an ancient cave with spectacular drawings. He sets up a project researching the cave with lots of students and specialists but then accidents start happening and people die.
The story goes back and forth between the current exploration, how the cave came to be and some monks from the 1100's. Lots of intrigue with th we local village people hiding secrets and also government officials not wanting the secrets of the cave to get out.
