I've got to be honest with you. This is one of the best books I have ever read. As a huge history nerd, it was absolutely fascinating to find out about the true story behind the novel. It was also interesting to find out about the second world war from a different perspective. This makes the book unique. I liked how the author has woven a rich tapestry of characters with their plots all connected to one another. the result of this is a much larger picture of Germany under the rule of Adolf Hitler, with a theme of fear included throughout.I would definitely recommend this!

I really enjoyed this book. Something that struck me when reading it was how quickly I became accustomed to the tragedy - perhaps so many sad things happened that I became inured to them. There were golden moments of hope and of finding joy in spite of everything, which were heartwarming to read. Despite the tragedy, the book was often laugh-out-loud funny and was written in quite a witty style. I'd definitely like to read more of Fallada's work.
