Picked this up in a charity shop as a random purchase on the shelf and honestly it's not a bad read. It started off really good and quite creepy but for me the ending really let it down. I just feel like everything dragged on throughout the last third of the book then quickly resolved itself in the last three or four pages. If you like creepy spooky reads with a sucky ending then by all means give it a read otherwise just skip it.

Creepy. Scary. Suspenseful. Creepy. Multi-Layered. And did I say, Creepy?

The book starts out very strong with some of the most compelling writing I've read in a while. At times downright beautiful and poetic, McNish creates vivid scenes and images that are unusual and refreshingly different.

Breath, breathing, breezes, wind, life, and death are weaved together in a spectacular series of opening scenes that capture and convey the key themes of the book.

The Ghost Mother is a truly disturbing and unsettling character. She gives Norman Bates's mother and Joan Crawford a run for their money. And then some.

The vision that McNish has for the limbo-like hell inhabited by the ghosts who do not make it to the Other Side is original and truly harrowing.

Did I say, "Creepy"?

Started out with good suspense but took a weird turn into Sixth Sense-ville but with a creepy ghost mother that wants all children to love her and kills them when they don't...

This was a creepy read but a really good one. I honestly kinda felt for the Ghost Mother and didn't believe Isabellas death was her fault, but she still shouldn't have done what she did to the ghost children or Jack and his mom, Sarah.

I read this last March and forgot to add it to my read list. I thought this was a great story. It held me wondering where it was going and what the ultimate story was (why, why was she like this?!) a pretty spooky tale.
