Read this to learn more about Frida Kahlo for the essay I am writing about her. I want a biography about her that gets more into the nitty gritty like her mental illness, her tumultuous relationship, and her affairs with women! This was not it. But I still learned some things!

This is a tame biography of Frida Kahlo, but does the job. I wanted to read one of the books in this series because they are quite popular. I found it a bit dry, but thought they did a fairly good job of showing who Frida was.

I appreciated the addition of historical background materials in between the narrative. Young readers will benefit from the help building context.

Good book gets a little sad in the middle and at the end.

I enjoyed this one. Very well written and informative. I learned a ton. Frida let such an interesting life and this is a great introduction for middle grade readers.

I enjoyed reading this children’s biography once my son was done with it. I’ve admired Frida’s work for a long time, but I still learned a lot reading this. I did have an issue with the author consistently calling Frida’s clothes “Mexican costumes.” Costume implies playing dress up or Halloween. I know that Native Americans wear regalia to a pow wow, not “costumes.” Culture is not a costume. So I looked it up. It’s called traditional Tehuana dress. I’ll be sharing the correct terminology with my son.

Who Was Frida Kahlo?
4/5 stars

This was a cute little informative starter book of Frida information. I did know a majority of this info but there were still a few facts that surprised me, or that I must've forgotten from before.

The illustrations throughout were beautiful and I loved the inspirational light this painted Frida in. I do think they glossed over some important pieces of her such as the fact that she was bisexual. Or some darker things such as the miscarriage she had or the infidelity in her marriage. I mean I get it, this is for kids.

Also my only issue was weird, it felt like sometimes they were just assuming things, like her emotions or motivations for doing things sometimes?

Overall-
Other than those things that I nitpicked, I still highly enjoyed my time reading this, I think that it was thoroughly researched, and it's a cute addition to my Frida Collection.

Honestly could have done without the nudes in a kids’ book. I used this with a reading group in fourth grade and it made for some awkward emails to parents.

As I needed a quick audiobook for a commute, this fit the bill. It is hard to read a book about an artist and not see any of the art. The book is age-appropriate, simplified, and sanitized.
