I've gotten big into early pulp adventure fiction lately, and Joe Kubert's run on Tarzan for DC in the 70s is a perfect love letter to the genre. It is simply one of the most masterfully executed comic runs I've ever read. This is peak late-period Kubert. I'm an artist myself, and his inking style is so inspirational in how he's constantly using different tools to get the right lines whether it's crowquill, school nib or brush. It gives these books such a lush, energetic feeling that was missing from the more painstakingly rendered comics of the era. His skills as a storyteller are also on point. He's working loosely from the original Burroughs stories but he takes some creative license with how he interprets it. He's also not not bogged down by overly verbose scripting that can make earlier works of his like Enemy Ace and The Viking Prince a little slow to read. These stories are fast, dynamic and graceful in how Tarzan flows across the page. Each story grips me and won't let me go until I've savored every panel. I read through the last half of it in one sitting today and I'm still reeling with excitement. I'm buying a spare copy at some point because I know I'm gonna read this one to death for inspiration and escapism.
