Not Fade Away - 6/5

Ah... books like this are hard to review, so much of my enjoyment is wrapped up in the experience of the book itself, which is true of all stories but especially with this one.

Just know that if you pick this novel up your in for a demented ride around America with plenty of drugs, demented hitchhikers and philosophy which should seem pretentious, but feels profound.

A drug addled road trip saga about a lost young American man seeking meaning through cultural mythology, and, by extension, his own mythology. Sort of Hunter S Thompson meets Pee Wee’s Big Adventure meets David Lynch. At times overwritten, but feels like a real artifact of 80’s era nostalgia for 50’s era mythology. Knowing what we know now about what’s to come, the whole thing feels even more poignant.

In early Sixties San Francisco, George Gaskin, tow-truck driver and seeker of higher truth, becomes intrigued by the story behind a car he is to demolish in an insurance fraud scheme, a mint-condition `59 Cadillac intended as a gift from an eccentric old woman to an early rock star, the Big Bopper, and never delivered because of his untimely death. I thought this was a good, but not great, read.
