I really didn’t like it that much. The plot.... He searches for a murderer (who wasn’t a murderer, by the way) and meets a dead man and his dog. I have no idea why I forced myself to read this to the end. The ending was actually sort of sweet.

When the body of a teen boy is found, Davie sets out towards the top of the hill outside his village looking for the suspected murderer, encountering many people along the way. Though lyrical and atmospheric, the setting, meandering pace, and general weirdness will likely limit its appeal to American teen readers. See my full review here.

As with all of Almond’s books, this is a beautiful, lyrical story. It tells of one day in the life of Davie, who travels the countryside around his home on a hot summer’s day - a momentous day, as one of his classmates has been killed. The story conveys the sense of menace, of grief for the loss of Davie’s own father, and of wonder at the natural world around him. The day ends happily, but Davie has been changed by all he encounters. Recommended read!

1 star because it was really fast to read so I didn't need to struggle through it.

1 star because the ending was OK.

This was one off my library pile and was a breathe of fresh air to read! Different. Refreshing. Perfect for young adult fans. It is a short read at just over 200 pages but a brilliant read. Well written. It was a nominee for the Costa book awards and it deserved it.
The story follows a young boy Davie on an adventure, a wander. Where will it take him? What will he see? Who will he bump into? There’s a stabbing in the town but it’s not as it seems. You see life through davies eyes throughout his days adventure. I loved reading this one. An easy read that can be read in one setting. I love the cover too.
A well deserved four stars. Highly recommend.
