I’ve now officially read everything by Alice Oseman 🤗 This was way different than I expected, although thinking about it, I should’ve known it was going to be super emotional and complex like all of Alice’s other books 🙈 As someone that’s always been a big part of fandom culture, I could understand Angel and how a band/show/person can become everything to you and while it can be a positive thing in your life, it can very quickly become toxic! I’m glad we got to see how toxic this can be on both sides, like obviously it can have a huge impact on the fans but people have to realize that famous people are still normal people and putting them on a pedestal the way we do is be extremely damaging to them as well! But I also loved that it touched on how important internet friendships can be and how finding people with the same interests as you can lead to real true friends ♥️ it wasn’t a full 5 stars because honestly, I wanted more after the conclusion of the story but also it gave me a bit of an existential crisis which sent me on a weird spiral 😅 but I did love it and would definitely recommend!

You would expect just a normal fan fiction-like book. That's not it. Alice Oseman always manages to put life lessons and such high reflections in her books. I loved it, and the plot twists were just amazing. Highly recommended ❤️

Oh my god, this book. This book. I absolutely adored this book; it is an actual piece of my soul dancing across these pages.

I love to read books about fan culture, whether it focuses solely on the individual experience, the idolized person's experience, or something in-between. This book is one of those in-between books, and it is magic. I haven't read a book this good about fandom since Fangirl, and I think I Was Born For This has taken a tied spot in my heart for awesome books on fandom as well as an amazing book as a whole.

I literally cried reading this, too?? When Angel realized the bitter truth of fandom - especially around these lovely boy group fandoms - I felt myself acknowledge a realization I hadn't ever admitted to myself but knew to be true. I love the focus on imperfect and the emphasis that, famous or not, we are all just people trying to live our weird, crazy lives at our core.

On a separate note, major major props to Oserman for doing so well with diversity; she makes it so clearly natural and important! I definitely need to get a copy of this book and keep it forever; it's a real gem that will pull you in quick and keep you thinking.
