Summary:
Laura Kinney, aka X-23, has not led the best life. Her childhood was stolen from her, as she was designed as part of a scientific experiment (with even darker end goals). Her story unfolds on these pages, partially through Laura's eyes but also through the eyes of her mother.
Review:
I remember reading X-23: Innocence Lost ages ago. But recently, I've been craving a re-read of all things X-23, so here I am! But seriously, this volume hits hard. Honestly, a lot of origin stories tend to hit hard, but Laura's is especially difficult to read.
This is one of those classic X-Men stories that will make you feel. Mostly sad, but also some rage. It's also a slightly different take on an origin story, as much of it unfolds from a different perspective. While the story is unquestionably all about Laura, it's not technically "her story" for the longest time. It's her mother's. That's still a surprise, even now. It shouldn't work, but it does.
This perspective lets us see everything about Laura's past, including the reason (and methods) behind her creation. Throw in the character development, and well...you can see why X-23: Innocence Lost hits hard, even two decades (yikes) later.
Highlights:
Teenage Superhero
Superhero Drama
Dark Backstory

Pretty good and serviceable, but I know this could be better. This is like a striaght down the middle story with no real curve balls to it, the bad guy is real evil and the mother is good but culpable ot the abuse of Laura. Hits a weird tone where it revels in thr violence she enacts, easily the funnest parts, but simultaneously wants you to be horrified by it.

Goodness! This was absolutely fantastic! I've always been very interested in X-23's origin story, even though I knew bits and pieces of it. However this turned out to be such an incredible read. Completely in love with it.

This was an emotional punch in the face. I want to hug Laura forever and tell her that she is loved and that it is not her fault, but I know she will feel like it is since it was her, physically, who killed all those people.
She deserves so much better. No child deserves this, the torture and the abuse was too much. Laura Kinney, I hope you get through this.

X-23 is a character I've seen show up in comics, but I've never bothered to read her origin story. Now that I've read it, I'm really glad I did. Innocence Lost is told not from X-23's perspectives, but from one of the scientists who helped to create her, and served as her surrogate. The result is a rather dark, but thoroughly engrossing, tale, where a child raised to have no sense of self, but serve as a weapon instead. In the process, Innocence Lost raises some interesting questions about whether we must become who we are programmed to be, or do we have a choice?
It's perfectly fine to pick up Innocence Lost without any previous knowledge of the character. The story is still darkly fascinating, yet moving at the same time (I got a little teary at the end). Combine this with some strong artwork and you have a comic that patches a pretty big punch given its slim length. I would highly recommend Innocence Lost for fans of the genre. I will certainty be continuing this line with volume two, Target X.

Just awful. Disproportionate artwork, offensively obvious plotting, and the cheesiest narrative voice you'll ever read. If you, like me, come to this book for more insight into "Logan," expect to be disappointed.
I should add that every female character feels like a plot device, including X-23 herself.
