I found the main character to be 2- dimensional and dull

It's never a good sign when you've named your work after a genre, you've doomed it to be nothing more than pastiche. It's the way *Blade Runner 2049* was never going to transcend, it can be very good but is inevitably stuck replicating the anxieties and aesthetics of different time.

TL; DR If you are interested in a modern Gothic tale give this one a try. Be sure to read / reread the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" first. It's easy to read for free online and you'll enjoy the book more catching the tributes to that classic tale.

I don't like horror and this was definitely a little grotesque at times (I wouldn't want to see a movie adaptation), but as the title indicates (and other reviewers have stated) this book is more aptly described as Gothic than Horror. There are sexual undertones and some brief strong language at times, so I probably wouldn't give this to a teen to read (I'll put more content warnings at the foot of this review). It's pretty slow until it hits the climax, but that's what I expected from this genre as it leads the reader along wondering if it's a head game... is there really something to fear...?

Overall, the writing is quite good and I loved the setting and strong heroine. I would say that the romance is negligible, and many reviewers have fairly complained about the pacing, but overall, I enjoyed the book, in spite of it not being my usual genre.

contains:
Spoilersexual assault, non-descriptive nudity, eugenics, incest, body horror, cannibalism, infanticide, murder, smoking / substance / alcohol use, brief strong profanity.

Satisfying foreshadowing, addicting plot, well written. I was on the edge of my seat most of the book!

This was just not for me. Too weird and creepy at the end. No, thank you.

I enjoyed it but felt that it could have taken place anywhere, was hoping for the setting to be more meaningful.
