This is a slim work of what is essentially prose poetry, and even translated into English from the original Dutch, it reads beautifully. Although the author was associated with the symbolist movement, I don't believe this particular work fits into that genre. This book is a rich exploration of memory informed by the five senses, presented as an inner monologue from the dying narrator.
I discovered this work via the Sherds Podcast, which is linked in Sam's review. I'm a fan of Sherds Podcast in general, but the episode on The Dying Peasant is particularly good, and is essential listening if you're curious about this book and whether or not it might be your cup of tea.
