McLeo’s greatest gift to her readers are her complex characters and this book is McLeo at her best! The villains are not purely evil and even the most heroic individuals have moments when their behavior is anything but noble. But you never stop rooting for Mauri and her friends to find a way to deal with the evil that threatens the world.
I really appreciated the deeper peek into some of the lives of those who are Mauri’s friends and/or protectors. The development of Mauri’s relationship with her estranged mother results in conflicting feelings for Mauri and I found myself struggling right along with her, wondering who her mother really was and maybe, just maybe, had she just been misunderstood?
Beautiful visual descriptions of location and actions along with complex characters trying to walk the one between good and evil with a dash of the complexities that exist in familial relationships . . .it’s all here.

I received a copy of this book with the agreement I would review it. That did not impact my great enjoyment of this story, or the opinion that this series, its sister series, and this author - Ashley McLeo - get better with each new installment!
I love strong female characters, and Mauri fits that category completely! She is strong and determined and she knows her own mind. But she also has conflicts and doubts, and hopes that people in her life will become better. Even when that doesn't happen she can see the good in others, including when she has to battle or harm them. She's a complicated, but very likable character and I am enjoying getting to know her better.
Book two of this series really ratchets up both the drama and the conflict and there is a ton of action in this story. There are battles, intrigues, double-crosses and family drama. There is also romance and friendship and family support. So much happening in this story that you don't have time to be bored and if you like fast-paced and exciting paranormal fiction, I recommend this series to you. Also, check out the two other series from this author.
