I didn't love this collection of Nasrudin tales the way I expected to. After all, who doesn't adore the wily, foolish and absurd antics of our favorite Mulla? The tellings were short - sometimes abruptly so - which wouldn't be a problem in and of itself, except that sometimes they were oddly unclear. Many were pithy and wryly hilarious, as hoped for. Others were merely abstruse and puzzling, which I suppose is how many people feel when encountering Nasrudin. But the tales as presented here are inconsistent in their ability to elucidate or at least convey what seems to be meant. I've gotten more out of other Nasrudin collections, and this one doesn't fare as well by comparison.

However, the accompanying illustrations are hilarious and clever, simple yet slyly witty with a spare use of line and ink. Often, they get the meaning across where words fail. That alone makes the book a worthwhile read.
