Funny, thoughtful and straightforward, Durrell is always immensely enjoyable.

I'd say that reading Durell is a pure joy. Him narrating an otherwise serious issue like a snake in your bedroom also makes you laugh because of his exceptional story telling skills. Now imagine him talking about animals, and his zoo and how he acquired each animal and the escapades of those animals. I chuckled and laughed out loud in many places and thoroughly enjoyed the book!

A delightful read. As always, I loved his anthropomorphising of the animals (as someone who grew up with a lot of different creatures and breeds around they feel v real) and some of the scenes made me laugh aloud (and relate them to those around me).

An interesting book about maintaining a zoo on the Jersey Island in the 60s. It’s amazing how zoo maintenance has obviously changed since then.

It is impossible to read anything by Gerald Durrell without grinning to myself as I read it. I fell in love with Millicent, the Malabar squirrel, N'pongo, the baby gorilla, and of course, Claudius the tapir who ran into the neighbour's farm in the middle of the night and had to be coaxed home. The warmth that Durrell no doubt felt for his zoo animals radiates from every page.
