Although for the most part, I highly admire Kundera, for me, this was too raw of an ugly truth about how we are with each other. Basically, the idea behind Ignorance, is that reconstruction of memory is a human frailty designed to keep our ego in a healthy state, and recollections of memory are skewed by individual perception and time. This goes dark side when people deliberately rewrite their narratives at the expense of others.

Spoiler“The same recollections? That’s where the misunderstanding starts: they don’t have the same recollection; each of them retains two or three small scenes from the past, but each has his own; their recollections are not similar; they don’t intersect. … When Irena saw Josef at the airport, she remembered every detail of their long-ago adventure; Josef remembered nothing. From the very first moment, their encounter was based on an unjust and revolting inequality.”

Philosophically my gut didn't enjoy this Kundera offering. Subjectively, I just can't abide by the concept that there are people who manipulate by omission. In not recognizing another person, and yet acting and behaving as though they do, I find this against my core ethos. Reciprocity is built on the bank of shared recollections. So, basically, I just had a 'yuck!' visceral response. (edited March 1, 2021)
