Another Name For the Devil by Mason Deaver

Good, but no more than that, sadly. One of those novellas that needed to be more than a novella for me to really care for it. Gabriel, a college student, unexpectedly reunites with their childhood best friend and lover, and they're soon drawn into helping him with a strange, dark project. The horror/paranormal parts of this were just kinda meh for me, and I'd have been happy to just have more gender feels and exploration. (I also thought this might have gone a certain direction with the demon but alas, it did not. I had a lot of fun with this book when thinking of what I wanted it to be.) That, or it needed to be longer! Idk, I just didn't get invested, and the writing never fully pulled me in. Still good though. Listened to the audiobook as read by Avi Roque, and they performed really well as always. I enjoyed the special effects stuff too.

I'll always pick up more from this author, but I enjoyed their YA contemporary a lot more.

Dark and creepy horror with trans rep. Excellent narration. I liked the atmosphere that the background music added in places.

Mason Deaver has done it again! This is so different from what I have read from them in the past but this was so thrilling and chilling. I loved the added queerness that wasn't central to the plot but was there and normalised. This book really gave me an insight into demonology which I found was interesting.

3.5,
It was a good listen but I was not in Love with this one. It has good characters and some development but maybe the story was to short for the type of development I was looking for. Overall it was a great story but it left me wanting more but also wanting to stop the story every so often.

3.5 from me. Very enjoyable. The characters feel grounded and real even in the more fantastical and horror filled sections. But, I honestly wish that there was more to this. It was a bit too short. The MC’s gender and queerness are only explored up to a certain point and it could’ve been much stronger. Still worth the time though.
