Snyder's book simultaneously scares the crap out of me and fills me with tremendous hope. History has a lot to teach us, if we'll only pay attention. Snyder makes that easy with this quick but powerful read.

This book has just made it onto my top ten list. It makes me wish I still was teaching. Should be required reading for all.

A pocketbook for understanding where we faltered in the past and what it means for our future.

A pocket-sized book for the privileged American in your life who subscribes to respectability politics and thinks Trump was an aberration in American history. There are some good points, especially in the epilogue re: ahistorical politics of inevitability/eternity and elsewhere re: technological tyranny and engagement at the local level, but for the most part the book is too surface level and couched in a stifling white liberalism to teach most people anything.
