This short story introduces us to the characters in the center of this zombie tale. I enjoyed it enough to look for the next book in the series.

Alice, Mark and Kyle wake up on the roof of the building they live in after another night of heavy drinking, and can see that something is not right. The fires creeping closer are a clue but then they see zombies eating people on the streets below. They quickly escape the building but don't get far in the car before having to go on foot, hiding in someone's abandoned house. Can they stay there or do they have to gather supplies and try to get further out to a more rural setting?

Ok here is the problem with these serial novels. They are broken into small bits of story and charge too much money for each segment. I only read this because I found this lurking in the depths of my e-reader. I don't buy anything except complete stories or a big omnibus of all the chapters when the story is finished. This is just a short introduction to the characters and the fact that a zombie apocalypse has begun. There is nothing wrong with the actual plot so far of people fleeing from town or city and having to hide until supplies can be found. I just didn't like one of the MCs. Mark is former military who drinks too much, and seems to blame all the problems they face on his companions. First it is the hungover Alice's fault for crashing the getaway car but he was just as drunk and never offered to drive instead. Despite hanging out with them, he moans to himself that they are useless and she is probably also a gold-digger(?). He might think that Kyle is useless due to his asthma and lack of experience but he at least has a gun which is more than Military Mark has! Alice was a bit whiny at times though I did like Kyle. The segment was ok but I won't be seeking out the rest to continue reading.

2.5 stars.

I read a lot of post apocalyptic stories. Why did I give this one only one star? Well, it is repetitive, not in the same exact words, but it says the same things several times during the book. It also is too introspective. Each character has long monologues of thoughts and feelings that are not shared with the other members and I am talking LONG monologues that get boring for me pretty quickly. There is no clear reason nor warning as to why Zombies have appeared in such huge numbers overnight. Plus it leaves you with a cliffhanger. The story is well written as far as sentence structure and typos. The characters are relatable other than those long monologues. In my opinion, there was not enough story to the book other than the monologues trying to flesh out the characters and their pasts, thoughts and feelings. If you are looking for a book with the usual apocalyptic story with lots of action and Zombies, this one is not for you. It wasn't for me, but I read the whole thing because I got it for an ARC, otherwise I would have probably stopped reading around the 3 or 4th chapter after giving it a chance to catch my imagination. If you like lots of depth, private thoughts, and backstory to your characters, maybe you will like it.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
