L.M Montogmery's writing will always be a breath of fresh air to me. She has such a talent for creating very vivid and colorful characters. Her characters feel real and whole to me. It's no wonder these are considered classics, I truly think they deserve that title.

This book is not one you'd pick up for an adventure, for spice, for humor, or any such thing. I think this is a book you pick up when life seems very gray and not in the nuanced way, but in the dull way. When you forget the joy's of childhood and the drama of youth, I think you should pick up this book. If you're very sensitive to harsh words heard in upbringing or stinging remarks about character or appearance, then don't pick up this book. I never took that as a fault of this book but some may and that is fine. This book is just not for you.

And I just love Perry although I feel bad for he is bound to be rejected by Emily. I think I do support her connection to Dean Priest though.

Rereading one of my favorite childhood books as an adult: while Emily is spunky, it was infuriating to read how much she struggled in a patriarchal society and the adults that tried so hard to keep her there. Does it hold up? 5/10
