All My Knotted-Up Life: A Memoir by Beth Moore

If you have any interest in how Evangelicalism works, you will be fascinated by this. if you are one of the many whose heart has been broken by the Southern Baptist church— and mine was— it’s a must-read. I was fortunate enough to get out of that environment in my twenties instead of being devastated after a lifetime of service, but the feelings and the scars are familiar.

I’ve read some reviews that are put off by the rural vernacular of the first half, but I went to jr high and high school in the Bible belt, less than 200 miles from Moore’s hometown. Not everyone talks that way but plenty do, and plenty more can fall into it when they’re among their own. If it’s an exaggeration, it’s only as much of an exaggeration as is embraced by anyone who grew up in a culture that thrives on storytelling.

In her pre-2016 life, Moore represented a lot of things about being female and Christian that I’ve worked very hard to leave behind. She was not someone I admired. But she totally won me over in this memoir with her candor and her willingness to share her experience. Great book.

This book is beautifully written, devastatingly honest, and so focused on the goodness of God in all kinds of loss. I am so glad that I read it. I’m so grateful to serve a God who truly will hold us fast.

It hard to rate a memoir because this is there life but this was 5 stars for sure. I have always loved Beth Moore and she has a gift of storytelling. I listened to the audiobook as I read the physical and it is her narrating it. It was a honest book that opened up a lot of her life but done so respectfully.
