Ultimately, a story of the rise and fall of a friendship between two Black women. But it's also about good versus evil, and how one's upbringing can affect society's acceptance. And how one can decide whether to embrace or reject society's notion of "evil." This book encourages the reader to apply the idea of "good" versus "evil" and "right" versus "wrong" to characters, while also showing why those labels should be dismissed.

It's hard to love certain characters and it's also hard to hate them. Toni Morrison captures important, hard-hitting, tragic moments to fully show their grief, power, anger, and despair.

This was the second book by Toni Morrison I've read, with Beloved being the first over ten years ago in college. I think Beloved is due for a re-read.

The perfect book truly exists! A 5 star rating isn’t enough to capture the brilliance of this novel. Like Toni put her blood, sweat and tears into this one. I haven’t come close to tears from a book in quite some time but this one had me teary eyed throughout. There’s so much heartbreak, so much loss, so much hurt wrapped into 174 pages and I have no idea how Morrison did it.

I will be bringing Sula to my next therapy session for sure. I feel like everyone should read this book at least once in their lifetime, there’s so much to take away from this soul crushing work of art.

I think this is a book I’m going to have to reread, only because I wasn’t in the right mindset to read it. Sula is short but packed with emotion and lyricism. Following the friendship of Sula and Nel over time, Morrison powerfully depicts the complexities of relationships and life circumstances through these two Black women. They’re incredibly messy and heavy things, and Morrison doesn’t shy away from the details. This is definitely not a book you want to read in one sitting.

I don’t have much else to say other than this: Morrison is incredible with words. Not a single word is wasted, and each one is used to craft beautiful and vivid sentences. Her gift for storytelling will never fail to amaze me.
