"A sleep deeper than the hospital drugs; deeper than the pits of plums, steadier than the condor's wing; more tranquil than the curve of eggs."

Finishing Sula is a mood. I have been emptied. I am dumbstruck, in awe, and lost, in the simplest and most beautiful way possible.

A truly captivating novel about the ebbs and flows of sisterhood and navigating betrayal, ultimately ending in an unfortunate tragedy.

I think this is a book I’m going to have to reread, only because I wasn’t in the right mindset to read it. Sula is short but packed with emotion and lyricism. Following the friendship of Sula and Nel over time, Morrison powerfully depicts the complexities of relationships and life circumstances through these two Black women. They’re incredibly messy and heavy things, and Morrison doesn’t shy away from the details. This is definitely not a book you want to read in one sitting.

I don’t have much else to say other than this: Morrison is incredible with words. Not a single word is wasted, and each one is used to craft beautiful and vivid sentences. Her gift for storytelling will never fail to amaze me.

Sula and  Nel were perfect for each other, meaning they really weren’t.
