This is a perfectly fine book.

I like the idea of providing a more mature re-telling of the events of the earlier—and decidedly more YA—[b:Pawn|26207599|Pawn (Strategy, #1)|J.C. Many beginning writers rely on their thesaurus and it's easy to tell when that's going on. [b:Fool's Game:|31312060|Fool's Game (The Strategy Series #1.5)|J.C. This is a really clever way to communicate the more advanced and subtle intelligence of the Ilintians, and I think that's what the authors are going for, but taking it beyond the dialogue into the prose struck me as maybe a tad too much.

I liked the idea that there were multiple complex schemes interacting behind the scenes of the first book, despite the new information making the first book's primary antagonist somehow even less relatable, and I'm now much more curious to see where everything goes in the next book of the series than I was before reading this supplement.
