I read this many years ago when I was a young teenager. It was a fun story and reassured me it's okay to like the things I did because it's important to you.

This book was about Molly. She starts a band with two of her best mates, and along the way they pick up two guys to join them. It becomes a hit real fast. But she learns that the music business isn't all it's cracked up to be, and the book becomes a kind of downward spire.

This book was extremely creative. I'm not much for books-about-bands but this was reinvented my outlook for them. I really connected with Molly, with most everything she did. There were never any parts where I was like 'OH MY GOSH, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!' I was on her level with it all. Especially the end, where I quote;

*small spoiler*

It might seem strange that I didn't run from the enforced day of fun, screaming at the top of my lungs. But to tell you the truth, I was saving up all the seconds I still had left with Dean. . .

It doesn't sound so great out of context, but believe me I choked up a little over that line. The writing flowed so smoothly and I loved the additions of magazine articles. The only few things I didn't like were;

-Tara and T. They weren't developed at all. The end with Tara made my mind spin. She seemed vicious and just out of character. Then her relationship with T, AND Molly. Which one?!
-I felt like not enough really happened in this book. The plot was great and moved fairly quickly. BUT we the readers already knew she was beginning to have second thoughts maybe 100 pages in. Maybe a few more unexpected plot surprises would have made up for that.
-Mom and dad? Alright. . . You were in the first 100 pages but gone the rest. Unrealistic much?

And the end with Dean. I kinda knew that would happen, but it just made me want to cry. All in all, this book was pretty amazing. 4.5/5 stars.

  • What I liked: I liked the story of rise to fall to fame, I liked that it showed how
    slimy managers could be
    , I liked that it showed the worst side of the music industry in a way that fit a YA novel
  • What I disliked: I disliked that it was a YA novel when it could've done so much more as a fiction novel. I don't like that Molly was so oblivious to a lot of things that it almost made it hard to even begin to ascertain what she was missing.
    I dislike that the band went on tour as a one-hit wonder.

  • Overall thoughts: Very cute book, really fun at parts with the dark underneath that really works for the music industry. Could've been much more if it dipped into those harder.
  • Recommend to a friend? Y for young readers or someone looking for a fun quick read

So I've probably had about the shoddiest week ever healthwise, and although I normally relish the opportunity to be stuck in bed reading, I have to admit I was really not up for anything heavy after finishing we need to talk about kevin with a stomach bug and a cold.

So instead of tackling the huge pile of 'literary' or 'classic' books I have to read in my room, I turned instead to the bag of old books my friend gave me before disappearing abroad for a year and I found Guitar Girl. I must have read this like twenty times when I was a teenager and I thought, why not? for nostalgia's sake. It was exactly what I needed.

The writing is very light and very buffy-esque which I was very into at that age but I could relate so well to Molly when I was young and the romance was really quite something too ;) I fell in love with bad boy Dean and was intrigued by the rock and roll lifestyle. Is a very basic teenager joins a band and fame is not as fun as you think kind of thing, but for a younger audience this is one of the best. I also appreciated that although the ending tied up all loose ends, it is not as one would automatically expect.

So glad I picked this up again, I loved it just as much as I did then and definitely made me feel better

this felt like a light but cautionary tale for mid-teens that are moving on from magazines to small novels. It was light as far as people development because it was heavy on some darker themes - the rock star life. It shows just how quickly "best intentions" can horrible spiral out of control and be "worst nightmare"

Molly is in the midst of the whirlwind of stardom and trying to figure out who the sheep are - when she should know they are all wolves.

I really liked this book. It's slightly romantic without overdoing it. I like Molly's temper, I see myself as a teenager. However, I had a hard time tolerating Paul the manager of Molly. I found him suspicious from the start and I did not like him. Dean meanwhile was mysterious from the start and I loved him despite everything. Basically, I enjoyed reading this YA book.

3.5 stars. Liked this more than I figured I would. It was quite a bit darker than I expected, too. But I really like Sarra Manning's writing and main characters and this was no exception. The men were all awful and there was lots of angst. The plot is well-trodden territory, but I liked this better than other fame stories I've read. Definitely want to track down Adorkable now.
