Interesting. I have to admire that Broder writes in a way that commands attention. That said, I felt like the narrator thinks with more self awareness than she actually possesses, as we come to find out. For instance, she has these scathing insights about what is controlling her eating disorder far before she seems to have even undertaken work to understand it in therapy. I initially loved the relationship between R and M, but I was disappointed by the ending. Cannot bring myself to get over “waft of shit” from the smutty parts. Really grossed me out. It’s not that I don’t understand that Broder is interlinking Oedipal desire with food and sex—that sex and eating are nasty but potentially cathartic, healing & obviously “Milk fed” itself is a play on this. It’s just that I found it gross and at times feigning profundity…

This really felt like therapy. A book for girlies with body image issues and complicated relationships with their mothers. So well done!
