Oh my god. This was dark. And brutal. Jake just keeps going and going; he's gone past the point of no return. Cassie tries to bring this up to him, possibly a last ditch effort to steer him back at least a little bit, so he doesn't end up hating his own existence after all this, but to no avail. It was interesting to see just how much he relied on her to be his moral compass; with her quietly devastated and essentially given up, he too completely lets go. Anything to win. There's only one book left after this, and it's undoubtedly going to be just as devastating.

There are many things to be said about this book: lots of commonplaces and plots with the matching counterplots, however, at this point in the story it is just necessary. I may not like this all-american-feeling of being heroic and Jake saving their friends from themselves, but it works pretty much for teenagers and YA in general. As much as I love getting face to face with the final boss or enemy and discovering that without his bag of tricks he is virtually nothing, it was at the same time a little bit insipid to put Tom's brother in charge of that layout of things to get the story going as it is something on "alien nature" rather than the constant events unfolding unexpectedly. I am anxious for the final book, it's been a two year path to this moment and now I'm craving for it.
