I'm still trying to make sense of what the synopsis said I would read and what I actually read 🫠🤔

Synopsis: mc will experiment with sex and drugs, then connect the dots between her mother and mc's youth

What actually happened:
(1) she was raped (I couldn't even think back to any allusion that she'd had sex after that) and (2) she tried an ectasy pill once that she immediately spat out (even though afterwards she is written as though she may have been taking drugs, it never explicitly says she is or says what she's taken/where she got it from). (3) Only from vague details and sparse memories do we learn that the mc pretty much is repulsed by both her parents for different reasons. She does not explain herself, we have to assume/or make educated guesses about so many things.

Overall this is true-blue lit fic in good form. It was easy to read and only took me a few hours combined. To me it's lacking depth, I guess because it relies 98% on the mc's thoughts and feelings. The other characters are mentioned throughout but barely discussed in meaningful ways. It gave dark academia vibes even though the mc was not currently in college (she claimed she was having a "break" or "gap year(s)" before going to university).

The book left me hanging in suspense that led to the middle of nowhere. At the end, the mc just leaves and embarks on a "new" (potentially not so different) journey.

If you're looking for a moody or "vibey" character study, this is the one for you. Also if you loved Eileen or Otessa Moshfegh-type writing this is very similar imo.
