Warning: Spoilers! This book is three stories about the Reserve Park bears and after reading the synopsis, I really wanted to like it. However, there were just too many holes in the stories for my liking. In Shadow Bear, we find out in the beginning that Jeneva is forbidden by the Council to mate due to a defect but when she mates anyway, it's all ok. Umm...what? Defiant Bear brings in a human, which has been strictly forbidden but there's no reason given for why the council does this. Eliza, the human, mates with the alpha and the council forbids this too. Again, no reason. Bear Christmas in Reserve Park is just a mess of things happening and a nice tidy resolution. All three stories end on a happy note, and they have so much potential. The lack of details just made them so-so for me.

Shadow Bear - Jeneva is left reeling when she is told that due to a wonky gene she will not be able to mate. But Rayner holds hr heart even though he is essentially in self imposed isolation after his previous mate, a human, aborted their cub and left him. She decides that is she can't mate she might as well have sex before she goes off into the Amazon to do mission work. But after some cavebear behaviour by Rayner when he hears her offering herself to her male friends they decide to defy the council and mate! I did feel that there was a bit of a let down as the council didn't seem to do their jobs thoroughly in the fist place considering Jen is alpha and an otherwise strong bear! But Rayner does manage to be tall, dark and brooding and oh so alpha!!!

Defiant Bear - Jaime is horrified when the council decides to let a human, Eliza, stay and study the den. The den does not react well to this news and she lands herself in some sticky situations. Jaime and Eliza are great characters but again I was left with questions as to why Eliza was allowed in but they then didn't seem to allow her to document her time there and everything seemed to be off limits!

Bear Christmas - Christmas time in the den and this seems to be a tack on to the previous story and a further epilogue to Jen and Rayner's story. There is trouble brewing with Phil and his hatred of Eliza and Jaime and Jen are trying to get the council back on side and show that there are no hard feelings. I felt that there was no real point to this story and again there was confusion as its stated that the council can't marry or have cubs yet a couple of the members seemed to have had a relationship at some point?

I received a free ARC in exchange for my honest review
