The Easter Hunt by Kitty Thomas

You know the worst thing about novellas? They leave you wanting more. I am glad more holidays will be coming.

Mina wants revenge. Not something that someone else does for her but her own sweet satisfaction. When Brian takes too long coming home from a personal mission, it gets embedded in her brain even more. When she finds out why he isn't home, she is glad to be able to let her dark thoughts out and make the revenge happen.

If you're not aware you need to have read [b:Broken Dolls|23509910|Broken Dolls (Pleasure House, #2)|Kitty Thomas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1415313699l/23509910._SY75_.jpg|43111444], which is where we first meet Brian and Mena. I do highly recommend both that book and this to all those who love well written, character-driven, dark erotic romance. Theirs is a complex relationship, their FB status, if they had one, would most assuredly read "it's complicated" and even that would be an understatement. It's unconventional, it's not love as we understand it but it's perfect for these two broken souls "clinging to each other at sea on a raft that would never reach land". Without all the background on this pair, you really won't get much from this short story.

My review of Broken Dolls can be found here.

So let's get onto talking about The Easter Hunt, which is a quick-to-read novella that I couldn't put down. It's not often I award 5 stars to such a short read, but I guess this had the advantage of me already knowing this couple, their demons and their motivations. I also understand the world in which they exist, which is touched on briefly here.

It's difficult to say anything without giving away spoilers, however, if you've read later books in the Pleasure House series you will know that the Mina in book #2 is very different to the Mina in later books. The Easter Hunt allows us to directly experience that first step into a new status quo that I like to think of as "Brina" - just don't let Brian know I said that, I don't think I could handle any time in his dungeon!

My my, we are getting dark, aren't we.

Brian and Mina's story continues after the events of Broken Dolls when Brian
rescues Mina from Masumoto
Mina is changed after that episode and in this novella we see just how much - and how far she's willing to go to
rescue Brian.

This book is interesting because the spicy action serves to deepen Brian and Mina's relationship but also change it, as both learn they're comfortable with more things than in the past. Brian is a cinnamon roll with razor blades.

Be forewarned before you read this one - very dark and messed up. And yet I can't help but root for these two br ken sociopaths who have found what they need in each other.

Loved it! It was fun to see Brian and Mina’s relationship after the end of Broken Dolls. And I loved that Mina came to rescue Brian and actually got it done because she listened to when he talked and remembered the important stuff. It was amazing seeing her become who she’s meant to be now. And I think Brian’s punishment for her coming to rescue him was very them.

I have been anxiously waiting for more about Brian and Mina’s story and Kitty gave a spectacular glimpse into their bizarre relationship. It was a glorious Easter Hunt, with Mina finding her way and bringing forth her inner self. This couple are perfect together, they complete one another. I can’t wait for more about them!

Trigger warning: Abuse

As someone who has a) been abused and b) a strong intolerance of men, I'm very, very selective with dominant men. 9 out of 10 times I usually hate dominant male characters almost immediately, especially if they talk to the female character in a way that makes me feel like he doesn't respect her (a trigger of mine).

Brian never spoke to Mina in such a way. I always liked how protective he is of her. One of the few tropes that I love in BDSM is the psycho-only-has-soft-spot-for-significant-other trope and oh my GOD I LOVE Mina and Brian's dynamic so much. Mina is so cool and Brian is so whipped and they're such a power couple WHEN DOES THE NEXT BOOK COME OUT—

This was a great quick dark and fun story with Mina and Brian. I would suggest you read Broken dolls to fully enjoy this book as we see the couple dynamics. I love their power exchange now don’t get me wrong Brian is the one in charge but to see glimpses of Mina’s domination was incredible.

The Easter Hunt is a sequel novella to Kitty Thomas's book Broken Dolls. Broken Dolls doesn't end feeling like a romance, but the novellas in the "Brian and Mina's Holiday Hits" collection show off their HEA. I was able to listen to The Easter Hunt, and I had a great time! I loved Brian and Mina's character growth and how Mina is coming into her own.
