As a young girl or a "tween" as we were called then (a cross between children and teenager) I was a huge fan of Jacqueline Wilson books. HUGE. I would say at one point I had practically every book she had published (up until THAT crossover age where you regretfully have to let go of your childhood authors and move on to something a little more testing, or risk your vocabulary being stuck in a rut for the rest of your adult life). Oh, and I met the woman herself in 2002, when I was 12, at the signing of Girls in Tears - yep, that's pretty much my claim to fame.

Anyways, Bad Girls was one of the first Jacqueline Wilson books I read, and one of the first books I reread repeatedly over the years. Looking back, it was definitely one of the first books I remember that hit on some very contemporary and probably quite controversial issues (for the time). I'm now 24 and I remember Mandy and Tanya vividly; their exploits, how embarrassed I felt on behalf of Mandy and how much a part of me wanted a friend like Tanya too. Some of Wilson's work can be a little hit or miss, and we all have our favorites that stay with us as we grow up, Bad Girls is definitely on of the ones that sticks.

This one was definitely interesting. It talks about bullying and dealing with bullying and about not speaking up. We meet Mandy, the young girl who is being bullied because her mom is older than other moms and because her mom babies her. I love that every adult properly reacted and adressed it - though this sadly doesn't happen in real life. Mandy also meets a girl that is part of the system, she is currently fostered by her neighbor but she later goes to the juvie because of stealing and goes away. I hated how judgemental Mandy's mother was, even though it turned out to be right. I just didn't like her or the fact that Mandy ends up being friends with her old best friend that became one of her bullies by the end of the book. But other than that, a pretty decent read for any young kid that deals with bullying.
