"I’m afraid. I’m afraid of you and I’m afraid of us and I’m afraid of this new world we’ve built, that one day soon it’ll be no place for me and everything I’ve done and everything I am. I’m afraid of everything that isn’t winter and I’m afraid of everything but dying."

And I felt that in my bones.

Easily the best title and monologue in the Tor short stories I've read so far.

Read this and another story of hers, Into The Gray, right next to each other. Two very different stories and yet linked by violence, survival, a desire for love and to live in chosen community. Very much appreciate her work.

It's a short story about the postpostapocalypse. It's short, but does a good job with its characterizations and worldbuilding. I read this to bridge the gap until I get my hands on A Country of Ghosts.
