I was so excited to read this, as it came so highly recommended, and, as I finished the excellent first chapter of this book, I was tempted to learn more about the author.  Unfortunately, I discovered that he is a self-proclaimed TERF and supporter of J.K. Rowling, who celebrated her history of anti-trans bigotry in an essay for her birthday.

It's such a shame that someone can write such a brilliant book, that so thoroughly explores the range of human experiences and so clearly advocates for us all having more compassion and care for one another, regardless of our differences, and then turn around and demonize another group of people for an aspect of their identity.

This would have been a five-star read for me, but I can't, in good conscience, give a rating to an author whose bigotry so completely invalidates the meaning, lessons, and beauty of the novel.

Excellent. You really get to know the characters in this book and it's a great read because of it.

I loved the structure and how it tells his whole story without telling the whole story! Beautifully written.

Beat book I’ve read for a long time, hands down. Everyone should read this.

If long books intimidate you, I highly recommend this book.  I've read some books that follow a person or generations before and this is one of the best.

Cyril was given up for adoption by a young Mom to two emotionally unavailable parents, who in the end he appreciates. I really like what they tell him in the episode.

The book covers his marriage that he escapes after 3 hours, his love Bastiaan and his murder, finding out that he was a Dad and "adopting " Ignac. The family he builds is beautiful. I especially loved that he knew Catherine for years before they figure out that she's his birth Mom.

It takes your through the journey that someone born in the late 40s as a gay man in a county that was not accepting. Also, heartbreak over loving Julian and losing him because of what he did to Alice on their wedding day (especially given that she was pregnant and was trying to tell him but he left). For him to see Julian next as he was dying of aids. Wow.

This is such a good book.
