I'm reading this as part of my Venom/Anti-Venom/Carnage/symbiote read through of the spider-verse.

I have a very fond memory of this book when it came out that doesn't really hold up. I think a lot of that is on my love of [a:Chris Bachalo|12726|Chris Bachalo|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1473385167p2/12726.jpg]'s artwork, which certainly holds up. This is a gorgeous book. I'm not familiar with Rob Disalvo (the other artist on the title)'s work but its very complimentary and never took me out of the story.

The story, though, is the problem. It's definitely necessary to progress the whole Mac Gargan as Venom storyline but it has its problems. Mainly, the humor doesn't pop as well as the colors. There are a ton of jokes that fall flat. Not necessarily because they didn't age well, they just were never that funny. Also, the plot elements all seem to be flowing nicely until the last issue, which is a mess of misdirects that ends in an unsatisfying, shrugworthy manner.

It's still necessary if you're trying to read as much as you can of the symbiote story, and, again, the art is great.

The idea of an evil Spider-Man knockoff is a good one. But this one is so evil it is ridiculous. But not funny. The first bit was this jumper was actually pretty good. But then he kept on eating bits of the bad guys. And no one supposed to notice Spider-Man had changed. With not especially good writing or art.

Incredible art by Chris Bachalo. The writing was...not for me. Felt like a horrible Deadpool comic but instead it stars the Venom nobody likes. Yikes. I would like to give this a 3 just for the artwork alone but ehhh. Honestly just read another book illustrated by Bachalo.
