This is a YA book that's good for even younger readers. I really enjoyed it, which surprised me because the first couple of chapters didn't make Croi seem very likeable. She grew and changed throughout the book and found friends and foes in interesting and sometimes surprising ways. One thing that I didn't care for is the Gaelic words for people and places. It's quite unapproachable for a YA book as those pronunciations aren't easy or intuitive for North America. I don't mind having to look up a word if it's new to me, but I did find it frustrating because I just wanted to read without breaking the flow to check. how to pronounce things. There was a page in the book with the cast of characters (which really didn't seem necessary) and I wish there had been a pronunciation guide also included. I've read quite a few fantasy books where the authors added that in at the beginning or end for ease of reading and I definitely appreciate it. Again, especially with a YA book.

Could have used a bit more build up but other than that it was very intriguing 3.5

I teeter between rating this 2.5 and 3. The ideas in this book unique and intriguing, but the writing is not great. It isn't poor exactly, but a lot of sentences were clunky, sometimes ideas or thoughts didn't make sense, and almost everyone in this book is annoying.

The book ends with a cliffhanger that implies this book was meant to be at least a duology but frankly, when I realized that, I just sighed. I don't see anything about another coming out so I don't think the story will be continued. I think the author needs to work on fleshing out their writing more but the plot, world building, etc was very compelling.

Also whomever on the marketing team decided to compare this to The Cruel Prince should be fired. That's an injustice to this book and sets expectations up that this book cannot meet. The only similarity is a female protagonist in a fae world. The similarities are barely there and set the book up to fail the reader's expectations.

For not being a long book, it took forever to read. The plot and writing felt too stumbling in every direction, was the on purpose? It just wasn't for me, though I can see where readers might enjoy.
