One of my favorite books of all time! I read this when I was younger and loved it. I remember finding Cimorene so refreshing and smart and practical. The other characters were very fun too. So I was nervous about rereading it again but it fortunately holds up even now.

It is a fun fantasy read - definitely a younger age novel, but a quick and easy read none the less. And, Dragons. You can never go wrong with dragons in your novel - except for when you do. But, yeah, I would say that this is good enough to let me kids read when they get a little bit older. Thank you for the recommend Kris!

I first read these books as a teenager, discovering them in my school library. Patricia C Wrede became a favorite author of mine, and these sweet, relatively short stories particularly stuck in my mind, so I'm re-reading them at age 31 and happy to find they're still delightful. I think my favorite is book 3 of this series, but the whole thing is splendid.
I would recommend The Enchanted Forest Chronicles to anyone interested in dragons or in unconventional, clever princesses.

Princess Cimorene, who is frustrated with life as a "proper" princess, runs away to become Dragon Kazul's princess. As a dragon's princess, she cooks and she organizes Kazul's library and treasure hoard. Cimorene loves this life even though she faces some nuisances (knights and princes) and challenges (wizards). But Cimorene rises to each challenge using her intelligence, bravery, wit, and logic.
A wonderful feminist fantasy. A great option for a family read-aloud.
