In my opinion the best way to read this book is somewhere inbetween the series (like when you‘re not immediatly hyped to read tower of dawn), because it does have some interesting backgrounds to aelin but isn‘t nearly interesting/well written enough to stand on its own

I don‘t recommend starting the series with this book, but I‘m also not sure if the best way is to read it after kingdown of ash because it was really weird to go from the aelin-rowan-happy-ending to the sad love story of aelin and sam (who isn‘t even mentioned once in the last book)

overall it‘s an okay book but far worse than the other in the series, and the entire time you‘re just waiting for the devastating ending you know is going to happen

Great collection of back stories! I wish I had read this sooner instead of before Kingdom of Ash. But it's still good to know what happened even though it seems I've already read past where it might be important.
