Some were stellar and some less so. There were times when the translations felt kind of rough and choppy, but I think that can be tough to overcome in translations. Would give it 3.5 stars if allowed.

Stop the presses: Russian novel is large and depressing.

Beautifully crafted folk tales from the land of Putin, Stalin and Peter the Great; as ambiguously complicated as you'd expect .

بیشتر احساس می کردم با خود لسکوف سر و کار دارم.
داستان که چنگی به دل نمی زد، نگاه های نژاد پرستی قومی هم که داشت، به مسلمان ها هم توهین کرده بود. انتقاد علیه دستگاه اداری کلیسا به عنوان چالش اصلی داستان معرفی شده، اما انصافا در حدی نبود که درون مایه اصلی رمان باشد.

As with most short story collections I really enjoyed some of the stories, but found some of them to be a bit boring. I thought the translators did a great job because I really enjoyed the writing, and Leskov is known to be somewhat difficult to translate. I definitely would recommend this to fans of classic Russian literature. Also this edition is just really pretty :)

Со школы знакомый с рассказом Лескова "Левша" имел представление о нем как о сатирическом авторе. Сборник раскрывает его с другой стороны - Николай Лесков видится коллекционером русских характеров, ученым- этнографом, сумевшим запечатлеть на бумаге типичные характеры русского люда начала 19 века. В обрамлении друг друга несколько абсурдные рассказы становятся более реалистичными, в своей сказочности очень емко вбирающими дух тех времен.

Agreed almost exactly with a previous reviewer about the unevenness of the stories. Wish I could have read the last few stories without the first two, in my case. The last few were marvelous, and have continued to kick around in my head the past few days. Would be interested in reading some literary criticism on them, even, which isn't something that usually occurs to me. Usually I'd give more stars for the quality of those alone, but the first two were so off-putting, for me, that I'm a little surprised I made it to find the gems at the end.
