I love A. Lee Martinez, and there were many elements in this book that I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters always roll with the bizarre situations they find themselves in, the humor is subtle and entertaining, and I love the kooky cast of characters. However, it’s got some solid 2006-era sexism, in which the only two female characters throw themselves at our dim-witted main character for no particular reason and try to fight each other to the death over him. Suffice it to say, the book doesn’t pass the Bechdel test. The descriptions of Regina, the lusty Amazon who wants men to find her attractive and beats them up for saying so, would have been hilarious when it was written - I’m sure I would have laughed myself. But now it just made me sad. Still an entertaining book that I was annoyed to have interrupted during the big ending battle though.

This was a fun fantasy read when I was really in the mood for a fun fantasy read. I won't criticize grim and dark, but I've had a bit too much of that lately.

And on top of writing inventive fantasy novels, A. Lee Martinez puts up excellent short stories on his website practically every day. He has a gift for writing and he's generous with his gift.

This was a funny book! I enjoyed reading the book from beginning to end. There were many lines in the novel that had me laughing out loud. Reminded me of something like Douglas Adams(which is referenced in the reviews) and Terry Pratchett. I caught myself reading lines out to my girlfriend because I thought they were that funny. Strangely enough, the last part of the novel actually mutes the hilarity for an all out fantasy battle. This author has the potential to be quite versatile. Obviously, he can write humour, but he may well be able to do some epic fantasy, too. I have no idea as I have not read anything else written by him, but I will be checking out more of his work in the future!

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. Until Ned learns his secret. I did not care very much for the cookie cutter end of the world plot after that. Would have loved it much more if it was just about an undead trying to whip this company into shape. Still tremendously entertaining story.
