So disappointing

I've been glued to this series from the beginning. The first book had me staying up until the early hours just trying to read one more chapter, just one more page. The second book had me doing just the same. Darken The Stars, however, was beyond disappointing. I felt let down by Kricket. I spent the first two books utilizing her drive, her independence, and her wit. This last one had me utterly furious with her. I hated who she became. I hated what she had done. I just felt betrayed.
This final book just felt like an enormous letdown. All of this build up...for nothing. Just disappointing.

Spoilers:

Okay here's why I'm withholding judgement. If you've ever been in an abusive relationship you know that shit is wrong but you don't leave the first time or even the second time. Kricket eventually leaves her abuser who she sees isn't a one-dimensional evil overlord like the first 2 books would have you think. That's depth and it's impressive.

I want to see another book where she doesn't choose either guy but ends up saving her own damn self after either become empress herself or getting her sister on the throne. Between her dad and the two male romantic leads, nobody is letting her escape down a rabbit hole that easily so a 4th book has to happen.

I feel like this story isn't done and I'm willing to wait and let the rest of this story unfold before judging too harshly. Yes, I hate Kyon but I appreciate the depth she gave to a character who could have had none as a lot of bad guys do.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved the Premonition Series by Amy A. Bartol. So when I had the chance to review this book I was ecstatic. It wasn't only this book that I was looking forward to but the entire Kricket Series! A lot happens in this book and it leaves you feeling shocked yet happy at the same time and only Amy A. Bartol can do this without disappointing you!

This book leaves off right where the second one ended with Kricket in Kyon's grasp. Kyon has her and he doesn't want to ever let her go! Kricket deals with a whole different situation in this book, learning that her father is still alive and in another sector of Ethar and on top of that, she has a younger sister who is also from two different sectors (who could also be the prophecy). Later in the book she even learns what her true fate is which will truly shock you and also makes you feel bad for Kricket.

I do get some what upset with Kricket for various reasons throughout the book. One is that she gave in so easily to Kyon and seems to almost fall for him. I definitely saw that one coming and was sort of rooting for that to happen. I liked his snarky comments in the previous books but I think I somewhat fell in love with Kyon throughout this book. I love Trey but I also wanted to see more of Kyon, to see what all this mystery was about him and why he wanted Kricket so badly. I didn't know how far things would go for the two but I was still rooting for Kyon because you see a different side of him. You see this sensitive side where he truly cares but then you see his crazy intense side where you are scared for Krickets life. I was happy to see what happens between the two of them.

Trey... ugh I still love him! *sigh* I really can't believe Trey wasn't trying harder to get Kricket back from Kyon... the one person he would never want near her. On top of that, Trey learns of Krickets fate and doesn't tell her when he has the chance and she calls him out on it. He ends up asking her to follow her fate to save his family. My heart breaks for her at this moment because she would do anything for him, but it seems as though he only cares for his family. I don't believe Trey and Krickets story ends there because I believe that Trey will follow her to the end of time. However, I also think Kyon will do the same.

Now onto Krickets father ... Pan. I don't understand why he cares so much for one daughter but completely turned his back on his other daughter. Even if her fate has been stated, he shouldn't just throw her to the wolves. Some people may see him as a hero but all I see him as is nothing but a dead beat father.

Kricket has enemies everywhere and it seems as though there is nowhere for her in this world. She doesnt know who to trust anymore and if she turns to someone she loves, then they will only end up in the crossfire. So instead she runs back to Earth, leaving us wanting to find out what she will be doing there with Phlix.

At one point, I was almost scared to turn the pages because I didn't know what new twist there would be or who Krickets new enemy would be. This cannot be the ending to the series with so many loose ends. Please Amy A. Bartol please don't make this the last book in the series because I NEED to know what happens next! Does she choose Trey or Kyon!

Let me begin by saying this review is difficult. I understand why some of the reviews on here are negative. I understand why readers are furious and feel betrayed. However, in my opinion it just reflects Amy Bartol's talent. Her incredible gift allowed so many of us the opportunity to fall deeply in love with these characters. Characters who became friends and felt real. That alone is worth a five star review. The truth is that we all can't get our happy ending. And what one reader considers a happy ending would most likely not be for another. Everyone of us have different feelings and ideas. But we didn't write this story. Amy Bartol wrote this for Kricket. And in the end she's the most important character in the entire series.
SPOILERS AHEAD
My heart is lying dead in my chest whimpering. Wait, it's still beating but it hurts with each slow, soft beat. This was the right ending for Kricket. She couldn't stay. She couldn't love who she wanted. She couldn't exist there. Regardless of her heart. Or lack of. She triumphed. She's going home. She never felt at home there. Earth is her realm. She missed her world. And she deserves the right to have her OWN identity.
Here's why I'm hurting. My feelings are a walking contradiction. I loved Kricket and Trey. He was great. I loved the boys. So my heart bled when he let her down. But only because she was hurt. I never wanted them together. Why? Because Kyon ALWAYS had my heart. Yes, even when we was viewed as the malicious murderer. Kyon did everything to keep Kricket safe. Broke every rule, defied every law, and never stopped. And he deserved happiness after his childhood. Thank you Amy Bartol for giving me him. I knew he was turned into my alpha make, and you did not disappoint. My heart broke knowing she left him. He couldn't even fight to keep her. That's why the ending crushed me so bad. She deserves love, and no one loved Kricket like Kyon. I am also upset thinking that Trey and the boys could be dead. They came around and aided in her escape, but from the previous way Griffin behaved I cannot imagine they survived.
I hope we see more from these characters. I think I could continue reading about this characters for years. They embedded themselves under my skin. I loved them. I guess for now my imagination will allow me to make my own ending. One where the boys survived and went home to their families. And one where Kyon leaves and find Kricket in Earth. Their love story could last lifetimes.

Honestly I love the world Amy created and have been soooooo looking forward to Darken the Stars. She's such a good writer, BUT THAT ENDING kind of seriously SUCKS. Now if there was going to be a book 4, I would have no problem with this ending. However the fact that there is so many unanswered questions makes the ending left feeling unfinished.

Although I loved getting to see the relationship with krickett and kyon develop, I felt she spent too much time on that part. Again, if she was writing a 4th book I would of liked that, but she's not so I fear she should have answered more questions or made the book long enough to get the whole story in!!!!!!!

We should all make a petition for a 4th book - problem solved.

I'm kind of torn on how I should write this review.
WHY? Because this book left me a hot fucking mess.

I honestly had to sleep on it because I didn't know what to write once I finished this book and I still have no fucking clue what to write right now.

This review may or may not contain spoilers and I may or may not hide them.
SpoilerSEE I'M A MESS PEOPLE!

So, first things first - I still don't like Kyon. I didn't like Kyon and Kricket together. I feel like Darken the Stars kind of took my heart and stabbed it. Repeatedly.

I'm breaking up with this book and this series. The first two - I loved. They were my favorites. BUT this book, no - just NO. I don't accept. Never will.

This review probably isn't even a review about the book anymore and I'm sorry but I'm really not sorry because I can't write this review right now or ever probably. I'm just going to forget that I even read this book and I will continue to think this was a duology.

I read this quickly and it was just as fast a read as the other two books in this series.

But, I cannot get past the fact that the author glamorizes an abusive relationship. Kyon has terrified Kricket for months: stalking her, kidnapping her, threatening her and the ones she cares about, and he even holds her underwater in an attempt to drown her. But somewhere along the way, Kricket decides she's attracted to him and lets that override her rational thought process. And then she sleeps with him! Repeatedly! I will admit that Kyon is an interesting, multi-faceted character, but I really wish Bartol would have played up the inner conflict Kricket feels and that she wouldn't have pushed Trey aside so easily. It was just really out of character for Kricket. (As was Trey's reaction to finding out she had slept with Kyon.)

The plot was a bit weak here, too. Suddenly, Kyon has issues with his dad and the entire brotherhood. The only explanation I could find for his break with the latter is that they're loyal to Excelsior. But they're so easily defeated by Kricket! It's strange and a bit unbelievable. Then Kricket runs away back to Earth with another priestess (who is hardly present in the book, so we aren't attached to her at all) who she's known for all of two seconds? And she gets away without much resistance, too? Again, unbelievable...

I feel betrayed....
I would really like to punch something.

The first 60% of the book gets a 5/5 stars. The last 40% a 2/5.
