This could have been so great :( But I felt like it was more about Rick and their grief than it was about Wade and Elliot. like they were a side character to their own story.

Also some of the scenes were... Just Too many words for 1 thing.

look, we love a good modern retelling of a great classic (everything Jane Austen ever wrote /is/ a great classic, thank you very much).
Persuasion is my favourite movie of her works and I felt in need of a good pining, which this book heavily delivered. Recommended if you, too, are weak for a) retellings b) Jane Austen c) second chance romances.

A Thousand Letters will take you on an emotional roller coaster. Brimming with excerpts from classic poetry, this angst-filled tale spoke to my heart on so many levels. Although a bit melancholy at times, there is a thread of hope and redemption that weaves together throughout. I have been a longtime fan of Staci Hart, and this is just another reason why I continue to adore her books.

“He saw me, and I stopped, and he stopped, and time stopped.”

Elliot is a selfless heroine. She quietly offers her strength and support to those around her all while fading into the background. Mistreated by her own family, she is lost in the world, not sure where her true purpose lies once her dreams are derailed. I loved seeing her come into her own, and grow into the person she was always meant to be.

“He’d been my end game, and when things ended, the path of my life had been erased, left smudged and blurry. I hadn’t found my way since.”

Wade is a truly damaged hero. Changed first by Elliot’s absence, and then by the war, he returns home broken and alone. He is unable to handle the emotions that are brought to life seeing his lost love. Wade’s actions really take a toll on those around him, but his feelings of unworthiness keep him from those that love and need him.

“He’d finally consumed all of me, fueling his fire with my soul’s tinder.”

Wade and Elliot broke my heart. Their journey back to one another is not an easy one. There is no instant gratification, they have to work past all the years that lie between them. Their struggles pulled at my heart strings, and at times I wanted to shake my kindle to get these two to see what was right there in front of them.

A Thousand Letters is ultimately a story of second chances and redemption in its truest form. Two souls who have lost each other, but have never let go. I loved every emotionally charged moment from start to finish. The writing was beautiful and the story heart-breaking. Put through the ringer, the end made the journey worthwhile.

Be warned this is not an easy read. I have shelved it under dark although this doesn't touch on themes that would normally be considered dark. It is, however, a heart-rending book with two main characters who are both in a very dark place. Just as I thought it couldn't get any sadder or more difficult to read, it did. I don't know how the author not only came up with this story but also managed to make such an, at times, despondent book so captivating. I think it is that she cleverly wove a tiny strand of hope throughout every part of this book.

Elliott and Wade made some foolish decisions, as immature teenagers (particularly Wade), that leave them still broken 7 years later. The book is written from both POV's and you can see how each main character feel's about the other. Countless times I raged at them to 'just tell each other' but neither is truly in the right place for their love to blossom and survive.

Elliott had a truly dreadful and selfish family who have treated her badly and, in her search for their love/acceptance, she has allowed this. Wade is coping with a family tragedy and also his experiences as a soldier at war. These form part of the plot and also of sub-plots to make what is an amazing love story. The whole thing is enhanced with some amazing literary quotes in the main text as well as a meaningful quote at the start of each chapter.

Despite an alarm set for 6a.m. I was still reading this at well past midnight. Only the fact that my kindle said I still had over an hour left in the book made me put it down.

This book. Had me crying. The. WHOLE. 331 PAGES. The emotion that Staci Hart pours into her novels takes my breath away. I love the Bad Habits series with all of my heart, and I am very pleased so state that Staci outdid herself once again.
