Awesome!

Read this one or of order as I didn't know it existed when I read the first Night Huntress novel! Very good story!

Good book. The pace was good and the characters were well written. It’s a prequel novella and not a romance story but that doesn’t stop it from being pretty darn good!

Quick and fast, about 2 hours on audio. Bones hit New Orleans where he is hunted, hunts and questioned by a queen. I enjoyed seeing Bone pre-Cat and watching his skills come into play.

This book worked as a decent introduction to the Night Huntress world.  I’ve had this series on my tbr for a really long time, since back when I used to read a lot more urban fantasy, and I decided to finally read a short story to see if I wanted to keep it on there.  I liked it well enough.  The story follows Bones, a vampire assassin hired by the queen vampire of New Orleans to hunt down a pair of ghoul serial killers during Mardi Gras.  A lot of this story felt very predictable, either because it’s similar to so much vampire lore (New Orleans setting, and naturally it’s Mardi Gras, isn’t it always?) or because it’s the kind of plot and worldbuilding that became very typical of books written during the urban fantasy boom (cities ruled by vampire “royalty,” vampire assassins.) Bones was okay as a protagonist, though I think he suffered from being a British vampire who got a platinum dye job halfway through the story - he really didn’t have enough distinct personality to handle the comparison to Spike.  I couldn’t get a strong grip on him as a character - he didn’t seem to kill to feed and he had sympathy for innocents and disgust for the serial killers, but he also manipulated humans to feed on them with no remorse.  I like both heroic vampires and morally grey or even evil vampires, but it was hard to tell where on that spectrum Bones fell.

The thing I did like is that, unlike a lot of vampire stories, this one didn’t forget that the genre originated in horror. The ghoul serial killers were genuinely frightening, the murders were grim, the victims tragic.  The ghouls are an interesting element of the lore of this world.  I’ll probably read some of the main series books to find out more.

In this novella, we follow Bones through New Orleans as he stalks a pair of undead serial killers. Bones, a notorious vampire bounty hunter himself, in turn, is being stalked by a red-haired vampire mercenary who may just end up being the second death of Bones and certainly causes a number of frustrations for him while tracking the ghouls. Mardi Gras is about to become a real haunting.

While very short (having originally been published as part of the anthology Unbound), I really enjoyed this peek into the mind of Bones as he was before he meets Cat. What I'd really love from this series is a book about the ghoul queen of New Orleans! This one isn't necessary to read at any point in the storyline, but it was enjoyable.

Diehard Bones and Cat fans, this one’s a tough read. Bones has the audacity to flirt and stuff with another woman, and while he doesn’t know Cat exists yet, THE AUDACIITTYYY.

This book was definitely just horror, not romance, and the images were wild. It was an easy, quick read that gives us an insight into why Bones is banned from New Orleans and introduces us to Ralmiel and Marie.
RIP to Becca, the human slaughtered, and the ghoul who’s name starts with J that I’ve already forgotten my b, and THE LALAURIES WERE CREEPY FUCKERS SO WOO FOR THEM BEING DEAD

It was a nice little novella that takes place prior to Bones meeting Cat. It was nice to get a little taste of what his life was like as a hitman. It was an interesting story that took place in New Orleans. I always like how Ms. Frost bases some of her characters on real people. The price was good at $1.99 and the writing was great as always.
