Rolling in the Deep is nice plunge* a new universe by Mira Grant.
The Atargatis has been commissioned by Imagine Network to take them out into the middle of the ocean so they can film a documentary about mermaids.
What they find there is something that ends up claiming them all.

I enjoyed the slow build and then the giant wave crashing* to the finish line. As always, Mira Grant creates characters with so much depth you can drown* in them. And then she kills them while you watch.

I want more in this universe. I'm not going to lie. I hope this was her testing the waters* and that she writes more in this world.

*All water related puns 100% intentional. You know you love them.

Good introduction to the horror of mermaids. It seems like a bad idea to send scientists and tv personalities to some unknown horror, but I guess that’s why it’s horror!

You don’t really get to know the characters that well, but they do get you primed for the novel and those characters.

Interesting start to this world building!

Skippable even if you like the book (and I loved the book).
You don’t even get to see the giant monster you probably came here for
