I started reading without benefit of knowing the Spellster world. Despite this, I found "The Leap to Freedom" to be an adrenaline rush of non-stop action starting with the first paragraph. That's the thing about fantasy. In an epic saga, the author has all the time in the world to build a world; in a short story the reader must accept a new reality pretty quickly. Alien forces your suspension of disbelief in the very first sentence.

Although I have favorite genres, and fantasy is one of them, I have pretty eclectic taste in reading matter. For the past several years, I find myself drawn to tales about seeking freedom, the concept of 'other,' and feminism. This story hits all those buttons.

It is always difficult to review a short story without giving it all away. "The Leap to Freedom" is well written and a fast read. It makes me want to know more about the Spellster world.

This was an excellent short read. There's magic, suspense, and interesting characters. It keeps you on your toes throughout the whole story. I look forward to reading more from them. <3
