For one of those free/almost free Kindle books, this surprised me. It was pretty well written even though some dialogue seemed strained and details were sparse for almost everything. I have some other little complaints but, overall, it was ok.

This was surprisingly entertaining. I'm not sure that's it's really high quality writing or world building, but man, I read through it really quickly. There's not any depth or substance here, it's more of an...action movie book, than something ground breaking. It sure is entertaining though.

** second read was better but over grilly at some point and the end felt rushed.

I enjoyed the first 75% of this book and then it kind of got weirdly boring. Not because there was no action but because it felt rushed and stilted at the same time. I can't say more without getting into spoiler territory.

All in all, I enjoyed it enough to read the second one.

A plague hits the world and wipes most of the population out. I didn't really like that aliens are the ones who seem to be the ones who brought the plague. I didn't really like the book but I wanted to see how it ended

A little too depressing and the characters are too broken.

Glad it only cost me $.99 or else I would have been extremely disappointed. It started with a great premise about Aliens wiping humanity with a virus and humans immune to the virus finding the strength to survive. It's another dystopian novel focusing on two separate stories: Raymond & Mia and Walter's journey. I did enjoy Raymond and Mia. They were extremely witty and well-liked. I also enjoyed all the culture references in the novel because it made the reader connect more with the characters. However, I didn't care so much for Walter, he seemed very needy and selfish, and to be honest his story was boring.

Now Do I wish to continue the series? HECK NO. I was bored out of my mind with all the long chapters and unnecessary details. I thought the problem was the two different stories. If it just focused on one story it would work better. Well, to my surprise that's how the series is broken down but I'd be lying if I said I didn't care what other characters did during the invasion. It's just too much effort for me and time I'm not willing to sacrifice. Sorry "Breakers," you just didn't do it for me.

Thankfully the characters themselves had fun poking fun at the fact they were running through similar ideas from alien-invasion movies, otherwise it'd be astonishing at the audacity of stealing so many ideas. The saving point to the whole thing is the author does indeed do something different, he focuses on losers. So many stories have the diamond-in-the-rough characters where through adversity they become unstoppable juggernauts of martial prowess. Not so these guys. They start pathetic and while certainly they become more, they're still pretty much sad aspects of humanity. Which frankly makes the story more endearing. Rather like a "Napolean Dynamite" of world-ending, alien-invasion stories. You never feel like you want to root for the guy because they're so uncomfortably real, but in the end you're glad they make it.

Interesting premise, plot twists, cliffhangers that made me want to keep reading. Characters were a little bland - had trouble telling them apart. And the whole thing about the aliens seemed not very flushed out. I would read the second in the series just based on my experience in the first.
