Sam Harris' letter to the Christian people in his own country of America covers the main logical arguments for rational thinking, and dispels many of the leading 'arguments' as to why Christians consider their religion true and the best way of living.

There is nothing new here for a long-standing atheist but it's well-expressed and flows quite well, even between unconnected arguments.

For a Christian, I can imagine this might make uncomfortable reading. And the only reason I haven't given this 5 stars is the fact that I felt uncomfortable with Harris' last minute diatribe against the Muslim world, some of which felt over-the-top and unnecessary to the point of the letter.

For the most part, an excellent introduction to Christians as to what atheists think about their religion and why we can't believe what they believe.

This had shocking truths, but also, wasn't it a little bit racist? An argument against Christianity should not be that other religions are bad, or even worst, it should be about this specific religion, with just a little bit of sprinkle of the fact that all religions can make people do immoral stuff, but just a sprinkle and not the whole damn ending.

Honestly, I agree with a lot of the broader ideas of the danger of religion and always have (not just Christianity but religion more broadly). I don’t think it should be present in our government or be as official in our country as it is, and while I see the positives and don’t blame religious texts as being catalysts to people doing terrible things, I still observe them being those catalysts all over the world every day. And that’s difficult to get by sometimes. However, the people that need to actually read and learn anything about this aren’t the people that will actually read this book. + WITH THAT SAID:

This book sheds light on nothing new/profound/well thought out/etc. The tone is really annoying and honestly very rude (and implies that any religious person is stupid which is just ridiculous). It feels like it was written WAY too fast, resulting in nothing being well thought out. Some interesting stats though seems like a lot of out of context arguments as well.

A pivotal look at how religiosity has cultivated generations of lemmings who lack critical thought; or do possess it but choose to use it in ways that are antithetical to the general advancement of modern culture and society.

In 90-some pages Harris eviscerates so much religious dogma: lack of scientific reason and logic; hypocrisy (IE Mother Theresa); bigotry; child pedophilia; etc.

The sad thing is that it gets worse with time. And he's right: scholars and historians will look back and wonder how stupid humanity was (hopefully).

This book is a nice and short summary on the basic arguments against Christian theism and it would likely be helpful to someone looking for proof that theism isn’t true. However, as an atheist of many years, Sam Harris comes off as a brand new, angry atheist. I doubt that this letter would actually convince any one out of their faith because the tone of it is so sarcastic and know-it-all that it would be an immediate turn off. However, if you’re already looking for arguments that God doesn’t exist, I’m sure this book would be a great resource.
3.5 stars.
