The photographs were great. I would have enjoyed this a lot more if Nicholson Baker would get off his overworn, shaky, full-of-false-claims soapbox about book preservation and paper strength. Some of the photos suffer from the presentation (the prints are much bigger than the reproductions in the book) - and some suffer from cuteness (the cover photo).

It looses a star purely for book damage. I see the beauty, but I also see books warped beyond their original meaning. That works metaphorically, but actual, irreversible book damage? Pain.

They are beautiful though, and tell stories beyond the book's contents. The story of a book, in of itself.

I always knew that books were amazing and beautiful as objects, but Morell's whimsical, textural, and striking photos of them proves I didn't realize the depth of that beauty. A must-read for book-lovers, especially since it has a several fantastic book-loving quotations in it too!
