This book was good, but it didn't feel all that original to me. It very specifically focuses on the preparation of the "I Have a Dream" speech, and how those words were not in the speech as it was written, as some felt he'd used that part of the speech too much.

I read a batch of pictures books today, and this was my favorite. So much so, that I want to buy my own copy. It makes me to read even more...
- more from the author and the illustrator
- more about Martin Jr, Langston Hughes, Bayard Rustin, John Lewis, Shirley Chisholm, Malcolm X
The main text is lyical and poetic. The last seven pages are full of historical facts! Many of the people illustrated in the back have a paragraph biography. I appreciate this! It takes a village to sustain social justice.
More of my thoughts will be shared later.

I got goosebumps.
It's not just the story, MLK preparing the I Have a Dream speech, but the storytelling of it, the deliberate pacing, letting the experience unfold. Add to that Jerry Pinkney's gorgeous watercolors. I especially appreciate that he labeled key people in his art that we might not know by face, the advisors and influencers, as well as those he carried in his heart because of what they had done, or in some cases had done to them. Pinkney further collaged in the corners with snippets of music, photographs, and other items. This is the kind of story you read with your soul.

Jerry Pinkney's (RIP) illustrations and Barry Wittenstien's words are poetic as they describe the rhythm of Dr. King's own words. Read the story behind the March on Washington speech. Hear the advisors and voices from those Dr. King advocated with. For God's sake...use this book to explain to those using the I Have A Dream Speech to say racism is over. They need this picture book.
Recommended for everyone.

A bawled through this entire book. Anything having to do with MLK or his iconic “I Have A Dream” speech will get me every time. I memorized this in 5th grade and always feel it so much when I read or see it on the screen. King did so much for the Civil Rights Movement and books like these that tell truths will help continue his legacy on for the next generation. #weneeddiversebooks

A gorgeous book that gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at how MLK's most famous speech came to be -- in fact, it almost didn't.

Good book, interesting look at the events that led up to the I Have a Dream Speech. I would say good for upper elementary and lower middle school students.
