I liked this novel, and I will definitely follow Silvia Moreno-Garcia's work from now on, but I kept wanting more from it. I think I was meant to feel attached to Lupe and Cachito and the rest of the hybrids, but they did not feel like fully formed characters to me. I would have liked more detail on their experiences and personalities. I liked that the Doctor and Carlota's relationship was very murky and challenging - it felt more realistic to me that the information gathered winded our opinions of him and her attachment to him in a very non-linear way. Overall, this was a very clever and thoughtful retelling - I think I just wanted to spend more time in Yaxaktun with these characters to feel more fully invested in them and why they chose to approach their struggle in the specific ways they did.

I enjoyed this book it’s not horror and I didn’t read the OG so don’t know how to compare it but I really enjoyed the stories and the characters especially the main protagonist. It’s kinda a love story but kinda not and I think it’s def sci-fi and an interesting way to think of AI and genetically modified people

Where I was underwhelmed and frustrated with Mexican Gothic I was extremely happy with this book. The novel sucked me in much more effectively and I actually became very attached and interested in the characters. The setting and historical backdrop play a massive part in the story and there are a lot of Spanish and Mayan words mixed into sentences which I found a little difficult to parse at times but, if anything, it contributes to the strong sense of place. I also really enjoyed the direction Moreno-Garcia took her Island of Doctor Moreau inspiration, putting a new twist on Wells' story and inspiring a new kind of compassion for the hybrids.

Though beautifully written I spent the whole time drawing comparisons to another book with a very, very similar premise, The Madman's Daughter, and unfortunately this didn't do enough that was notably different enough for me to feel like I was getting something new.
