3.5. I love the magic in these, the idea of magic coming from other people when they die. I also liked how Ileni was torn between the joy she received from using it and the loathing the knowledge of its origins gave her.

"She had grown up believing that destroying the Empire was her life's goal, the hope of every Renegai. But too many of her childhood beliefs had been shattered in the Assassin's Caves. She needed to see for herself."

Thanks to Edelweiss and Greenwillow Books for giving me this book to review.

Ileni discovers that losing her powers and ending up with the assassins is all part of a plan for her to destroy the Empire. The only problem with this plan is that she does not want to be a weapon, all she wants to discover the truth. She is now in the heart of the Empire, at their academy for sorcerers, yet she is more confused than ever. Some of the people are not as she had been lead to believe, and she is tempted by the empires evil magic. On top of all that, her budding romance with Sorin, the assassin’s leader, is being threatened by their differences in beliefs. Will Ilena become the weapon she was designed to be or forge her own path and find another way to bring down the empire?

Death Marked is the enjoyable sequel to Death Sworn but is not as good as the first book. This book has action and suspense but not as much romance. I could not get into to this book and it didn’t hold my interest as much as Death Sworn.

Ileni is really indecisive in this book and I wished she would just make up her mind, but she has grown up since the start of the first book. Sorin is not in this book as much, yet we did get some of his POV which means we get to understand him better. There are also some new characters which were interesting as well as some ones from the last book.

I am not sure if there is going to be another book in this series but I would be interested in reading more about Ileni and Sorin. I would recommend Death Marked to fans of the first book Death Sworn.

I do like the way Cypess often twists expectations and subverts tropes. She does that a couple of places in this too, but I found it not quite as engaging as [b:Death Sworn|13549218|Death Sworn (Death Sworn, #1)|Leah Cypess|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1372091946s/13549218.jpg|19115106]

I read this book knowing it was the conclusion but when I got towards the end of it, I had to go online to make sure what I read was correct. The book overall was a bit disappointing. It felt like nothing was resolved. I feel like this book just undid everything in the first book such as Ileni's and Sorin's relationship.

The ending was poorly written and not very believable.

You know why I love this book? It’s not the most entertaining story or the most creative nail biter, but the character struggles are DEEP. Ileni presents us with a truth that there are not just two sides to a war. There is evil to be found on all sides. There are good intentions on all sides. She takes us through a humanizaron process. She struggles with her selfish desires. She is at a crossroads that has seemingly no happy ending.

We also see that she has grown up with a certain worldview, and it is constantly being challenged. She battles with the misinformation and lies that she grew up with. She goes from being supremely skilled and gifted to realizing her insignificance upon meeting an entire empire. She meets people on the opposing side who have the same goal as her, and she grapples with that dissonance.

The death sworn series isn’t one of those reads where I end it thinking, “how in the world did the author THINK of all of that?!” Rather, it’s a series in the fantasy genre that feels like it presents some of the deepest cultural struggles of all time. It brings the reader to a point of realizing that not everyone thinks the way I do. And the ending feels like the most real life situation that could happen, which probably disturb a lot of readers.

I feel like a whole lot of nothing happened? And that this is also somehow setting up for a third book that never came? Also the ending was very rushed. I found myself rushing to get to the end for it to just be over. The first one had potential. This second one squandered it.
