Powerful novel, great writing. Without lived experience, I can't say whether this book is spot on, but it certainly seemed so. Four stars instead of five because there were so many intersecting storylines that I frequently lost track of who was narrating and how they fit into the story. Trigger warning for A LOT of tough stuff.

The writing was well done, the setting is described so that you can visualize it without being too flowery with prose or bogging down the story, those who have been to or live in the area can relate. The characters were interesting, well-rounded, evolved emotionally, and realistic, as well as relatable to many readers. The only draw back for me is the open-endedness and lack of any resolutions to what is going on in the slice of life of all the characters who constantly cross paths. This is a long book and to get all the way to the end and be so invested for it to just stop...it was a bit of a disappointment. Not everything needs to be wrapped up neat and tight with a pretty bow but I would like to know what happens to the action/drama scene that was playing out at the literal cut-off of the page.

There's a few intriguing plotlines in this panoramic portrait of the desert/oasis that stretch east of LA, but it kinda ends up feeling like COVID-era Crash (2005)? A fair amount of faux-depth and characters who seem, well, questionable subjects for the writer.
